In this video Alan Macfarlane shares his knowledge on the history of drinking tea in England. According to Macfarlane Tea was first discovered in India in Assam Province where he was born and brought up on a tea plantation. The tea plant developed two great features, caffeine and something that killed off the bacteria which attacked the plants leaves. It was then found by various tribal groups who chewed it an rubbed it on their wounds with a positive effect. He states that some Chinese visitor must have noticed these tribal actions and tried it himself. having discovered it relaxed him he took it back to china. In the period before Christ the tea leaf was taken back to china and planted in Monastery gardens and grew it a medical herb.

Then in the 8th century a visitor from Japan took some plants back to japan and again planted them in monastery gardens. Here a Zen buddhist monk found if you ground the leaves into samll pieces and drank it as green tea and turned it into a formal ceremony it was found to have great properties. He wrote a book on its qualities for helping the stomach as well as helping concentration. Tea drinking then became a national institution in japan much like cricket was in England. Everything in japan became tea orientated from the pottery to the arts and even religion. It permiated everything in japan and people were drinking small thimbles full throughout the day.

It was this culture that the European discovered when they first visited Japan. They were so struck by this that they quickly took the idea back to Europe.

No serious collector of antique silver would be without a Tea set as pride of place in their collection. However this is only part of the tea drinking story. When Tea was first fashionable it was an extremely expensive commodity. Hence the need for a separate container to store it in. The Tea Caddy was therefore born and it soon became fashionable to craft them in silver to match existing sterling silver tea sets.

Today finding a decent antique silver caddy can be difficult. However here is an example of a very nice Antique Silver Tea caddy which bears hallmarks for London 1901 and sponsors marks for that fine set of Silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd which should compliment most collectors tea sets quite well.

It is offered for sale by Silver2treasure from its website. There are two links here one to the Silver Tea caddy List page and the next to the actual Antique Silver Tea Caddy itself. Why not click the links and take a look. There are multiple pictures of the tea caddy to view. (if the link opens up the home page I am sorry to say it means the tea caddy has sold).

Good luck with your collecting

Regards

Steve

It is of a good size and is oval in shape with a wide upturned lipIt has a very pretty engraved floral and scroll border to the top of the body and it has an engraved greek key pattern around the raised oval baseThese letters are on the back, (unless you are left handed) of the jug so when the jug is facing you they cannot be seenIt is made from a good guage of silver and has clear hallmarks, except for the makers marks which are completely rubbedIt is in very good condition with just one little pin prick ding, but this is minor particularly as it is 208 years oldThis really is a very good, useable antique Georgian solid silver cream jug of a good size, that would look impressive in any home and a must for any collector of good Georgian silver .
The trug shaped basket body has panelled sides and a fixed rectangular handle. This little sugar trug comes with a little pair of matched solid silver sugar tongs. Both items are made from a good guage of silver and have clear hallmarks Silver Makers Marks: The Basket J D & S (James Deakin & Sons), the Tongs CB & S (Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd)

The Basket 4.5 inches long, just over 2.25 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall to top of handle. The Tongs 2.75 inches long. They weigh a total of 56g

There are a couple of little shallow pin prick dings to one area in the base, but these are minor and there is a slight foot impression to one of the feet, but again this is minor. I purchased this a pair so I do have another one, but I have split them up as the other trug is slightly older and the tongs are plain, but if you would like to keep them as a pair, then please do not miss it .Also they amy be ised as little bon bon dishes (the tongs could be used to serve the sweets or chocolates).Stock No. 4953

It has a shallow wide lip and is raised on 4 ball feet. It is made from a good guage of silver and has clear hallmarks except for the makers marks which are almost completely rubbed, apart from the last two letters which I can just about make out as "WH" and these are underneath what I think are two other marks. It weighs 148g. It is in good condition, but I would say that it has had some small impressions removed, and there is some light surface scratching, which is only to be expected on a metal item and is commensurate with its age. This is a good antique Georgian solid silver cream/milk jug, ideal for use for many more years, and also a lovely addition to any collection of Georgian antique silverStock No. 4877

It has a part swirl reeded pattern to the base of the body and an embossed border around the top part just under the rim, which is also mirrored on the hinged circular domed lid, which has a flame shaped finial. It has a dark wooden question mark shaped handle. It measures 8.5 inches tall, 8.5 inches wide from lip to handle, the actual body is 4.25 inches wide at its widest bulbous base point and it weighs 397g. It holds just under 1 pint (19 fl oz)

Overall it is in very good condition with just a couple of very very minor shallow dings and some light surface scratching, which is only to be expected on a metal item and is commensurate with age and use. It also has a very slight wobble, and although again this is very minor, felt I had to point it out, as I do try to list my items as accurately as possible. This is a very good antique solid silver Victorian water jug, of a very elegant shape and a lovely useable jug

Stock No. 4734
